Wi-Fi vs LAN

When to use which, and why you really want a cable.

We provide both, but they are for different things.

Wired LAN (Ethernet)

Use for: Gaming, large downloads, stability.

  • Every seat has a dedicated cable.
  • Gigabit speed (usually).
  • Lowest latency.
  • Required for tournaments.

Wi-Fi

Use for: Phones, tablets, browsing on laptops while eating.

  • Shared bandwidth.
  • Higher latency and jitter.
  • Subject to interference from hundreds of other devices.
  • Do not game on Wi-Fi. You will lag, and you will blame the network, but it’s physics.

No Ethernet port?

If your laptop has no Ethernet port:

  • Use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
  • Ask around if you didn’t bring one; someone might have a spare.
  • Use Wi-Fi as a last resort, but expect lag.
