Bandwidth Etiquette

How not to be the person causing lag for everyone else.

While our local network (LAN) runs at gigabit speeds, our internet connection is shared. If one person starts streaming 4K video or torrenting, they can ruin the ping for 100 other players.

The Shared Pipe

Think of it like a highway. The LAN (local traffic) is a 10-lane superhighway where you can speed. The internet connection (uplink) is a 2-lane exit ramp. If it gets clogged, everyone stops.

What You Should Do

1. Pause Cloud Sync

Before connecting, pause these services:

  • OneDrive / Google Drive / Dropbox
  • iCloud Photos
  • Steam / Epic background downloads (unless you are about to play that game)

2. No Torrenting

P2P traffic opens hundreds of connections, stressing both the firewall and the bandwidth. The LAN is not the place to download the entire internet.

3. Stream Responsibly

If you’re watching video while not gaming:

  • Twitch/YouTube: Set quality to 720p or 1080p instead of 4K.
  • Use your mobile data on your phone if possible.

4. During Tournaments

When official matches are live (e.g., CS2 or LoL finals), please minimize your internet usage. Respect the finalists by ensuring they don’t lag because of you.

Use the Local Cache!

Need to update a game? No problem! Our Local Downloads server caches updates for popular platforms (Steam, Battle.net, etc.). You can download these at LAN speeds (fast) without burdening the internet connection.
