Voice Chat Setup

TeamSpeak for LAN, Discord for online. Push-to-talk is best practice.

At the LAN, we use TeamSpeak 3 for voice communication.

Why? Because it runs on the local network, has zero latency, and doesn’t eat up internet bandwidth. Keep Discord for text chat and screen sharing.

TeamSpeak 3 (Primary)

Connection:

Push-to-Talk Setup (Best Practice):

  1. Tools > Options > Capture.
  2. Select: Push-To-Talk.
  3. Assign a key (e.g., mouse side button, V, Alt).
  4. Verify with “Begin Test”.

Volume Normalization: If someone is too quiet or too loud:

  • Right-click their name > Change Volume.

Discord (Online / Text)

We use Discord primarily for text communication, announcements, and off-site chat.

If you do use Discord for voice (not recommended during games due to lag):

Push-to-Talk Setup:

  1. User Settings (gear icon) > Voice & Video.
  2. Input Mode: Push to Talk.

Noise Suppression:

  • Enable Krisp noise suppression so the whole hall isn’t broadcasted.

No sound / headset not detected?

  1. Check Windows: Right-click speaker icon > Sound settings > check Output device.
  2. USB Headset: Unplug, wait 5 seconds, replug.
  3. In-game: Check audio output device settings (many games default to “Default” which might be wrong).
  4. Control Panel: Press Win + R, type mmsys.cpl. Make sure your headset is set as Default Device.

General Etiquette

  • Don’t shout. Your neighbor is sitting 50cm away from you.
  • Use closed-back headphones. Open-back headphones leak sound that your mic will pick up (echo).
  • Mute yourself when eating or coughing.
